Sony MDR-5770 Noise Cancelling Airplane Headphones

Noise Cancelling Headphones

The MDR-5770 is a noise-cancelling headphone manufactured by the Sony Corporation in Malaysia. These particular ones have the All Nippon Airways (ANA) branding, which is an airline in Tokyo.

The built-in noise cancellation circuit is very effective at eliminating the constant hum of the engines, including any low frequency hum transferred off the aircraft structure. It is just as effective in a car and useful if you had a noisy car engine. These are also extremely useful in a data centre where there is room full of computer cooling fans producing a constant hum all day. You could put these headphones ON and they provide pinpoint silence with the noise cancelling system.

Many airplanes have a selector switch at the passenger panel, which enables them to use the headphones with or without noise cancellation. Usually it is a 3-way selector switch with the options, OFF, Music + NC, and NC. If the plane had noisy engines, and you could not sleep, and did not want to listen to music, then selecting NC, cancels almost all noises from the outside and you get almost pinpoint silence.
